Keeping our kids safe online starts with being involved in their digital lives.  As parents and guardians we need to know what apps they’re using, who they’re talking to, and what they’re seeing and sharing.   It's important to create a free, open dialogue with out kids about the dangers of online grooming, cyberbullying, and people who may not be who they claim to be.

Use parental controls, set age-appropriate boundaries, and don’t be afraid to check their devices regularly. Most importantly, create an environment where your kids feel comfortable coming to you if something goes wrong, without fear of embarrassment or punishment. Remember, our kids may be tech-savvy, but that doesn’t mean they’re equipped to recognize every online danger. Stay involved, keep the conversation going, and don’t underestimate the importance of your presence in their digital world.

Online grooming can happen through social media, gaming platforms, and phone apps. Predators often build trust before gradually crossing boundaries. If you have kids, stay educated about the technology they use, the games they play, and the apps they download. Don’t assume they’re safe just because they’re at home. Stay involved, ask questions, and keep the conversation open.

We’ve created a handout to help parents identify apps of concern, establish five healthy technology habits for their families, and find trusted resources to stay informed about online threats, technology, and child exploitation.
